Nigerian politicians set to earn higher pay despite growing poverty

Nigerian political office holders who are already some of the highest paid and most corrupt in the world are set to earn even higher amount.

This is according to the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commision (RMAFC) which says it has begun a review to that effect. This is despite the fact that Nigeria is already rated as a “lower-middle income country” by the World bank.

The country’s FG has also reiterated that revenue generation has been unable to match the expenditures in the country. The news was greeted by dismay amongst many civil rights groups in Nigeria who queried the wisdom behind increasing the pay of political office holders amid the growing inequality in the country.

Reacting to criticisms from Nigerians, the Chairman of RMAFC, Mr Elias Mbam, said the pay package of political office holders could go up or down after the process.
